FR ED JALBERT: 25 YEARS AT ST JOSEPH HIGH SCHOOL, SANTA MARIA

At the annual Teachers Appreciation Day, on February 16, 2017, our confrere Fr. Ed was honored for his 25 years of "service" at St. Joseph High School. At the end of mass presided by Fr. Ed,  senior student Julianna Brunello shared the following laudatory remarks ( for an encouraging example for young Josephites) :

If someone told me that a priest could also be a self-educated rocket scientist, comedian, fashion icon, actor, and educator, I would have thought the impossible. Then I met our beloved Fr. Ed. Growing up attending St. Louis de Montfort Parish, I saw Fr. Ed speak with passion every Sunday. Luckily, I witnessed Fr. Ed speak with the same vigor on a totally different subject in a classroom setting during Advancement Placement U.S. History, or APUSH.

Our St. Joseph campus is truly blessed to have Fr. Ed as our chaplain. Throughout my four years at St. Joe, I have witnessed Fr. Ed speak sermons through the power of the Holy Spirit. No matter at a mass or retreat, we can count of Father Ed giving a calculating speech that ties the lessons of Jesus' love and apply it to our lives. As a youth minister, I have seen Fr. Ed's respected presence and composure throughout the year. During the freshman retreat as Fr. Ed was about to raise the Eucharist, the sprinklers commenced to douse the whole freshman class. As the youth ministers rushed to stop the flood, Fr.Ed stood right where he was saying " We all needed a blessing anyway!"

I never knew the extent of Fr. Ed's humor until I became one of his students. After he graded our tests, we eagerly asked him how we did. Fr. Ed replied "well, you guys are all in the same boat." We breathed a sigh of relief until he said, "but the boat  is sinking". However, even though we testified we were drowning, we managed to stay afloat through Fr. Ed's persistence and belief. But that is the type of teacher Fr. Ed is, a man who inspired us to always work hard.

Fr. Ed absolutely dazzles his students, not only through his trend-setting cardigans, the sky blue one being my personal favorite, but also the way he manages to turn back time with his accents. Every day was a new adventure. British soldiers, southern farmer, or Russian czar. Fr. Ed turned the drab words into realities, showing us the power of history. I do have to thank Fr. Ed for never becoming angry at me for partaking in the chatter triangle in the back of the classroom. Never once raising his voice, Fr. Ed would just say, "are we ok back there?" It became his trademark saying throughout the year.

Most importantly, thank you Fr. Ed for being an educator, someone who has inspired us with your passion for knowledge. Someone who has been encouraging the St. Joseph community for 25 years through many roles as vice principal, financial advisor, chaplain, and teacher. You always taught us to remember history because it repeats itself. I only hope that the lessons you have taught us, the thirst for knowledge and love of Jesus become attributes that repeat itself throughout my lifetime. I also hope when someone annoys me with never-ending chatter that I not react with anger but a cool and peaceful, "are we ok back there?"

On the feast of St. John Bosco, Jan. 31st, all of the Catholic Elementary Schools in the Santa Maria Valley, St. Louis de Montfort, St. Mary of the Assumption, La Purisima gathered at St Joseph High School to celebrate this national Catholic Schools' week. This was the first time in 6 years that it was celebrated at our high school, and about 1000 students filled the school's gym.  Fr Ed Jalbert was the main celebrant, and Frs. Ludo, Charles, Ed, John, Alfred, and Aidan Peter of the Josephites along with the pastors of the local parishes celebrated the Mass.  Fr. Ed gave the homily.  Following the Mass, the students played games on the school’s fields, ate lunch and then returned to their schools.

RIP Herman Van de Walle CJ

Le Père Herman Van de Walle, ancien missionnaire et ancien supérieur de La Berlière, est décédé doucement le 15 decembre 2016 dans la maison de repos à Erpe-Mere.

Fr Herman Van de Walle, former missionary and former Superior of La Berlière, died peacefully in the nursing home at Erpe-Mere on the 15th December 2016.

VISIT TO CAMEROON

On the 6th – 21st November 2016 Father Jacob, Superior General, accompanied by Brother Michael, visited the confreres at work in the extreme north of Cameroon. Because of the delicate security situation in an area threatened by attacks and kidnappings by Boko Haram, who infiltrate the region from Nigeria, whose border is very close, the visitors were not able to stay in our parishes but, at the insistence of the Bishop of Maoua-Mokolo, they had to stay at the Procure in Maroua. For their daily visits to the parishes the vigilant presence of an armed soldier was required. Despite these challenging circumstances, the visitors were warmly welcomed by all and the measures put in place for their protection gave them a sense of security and calm. Our confreres work with great commitment in the difficult circumstances of this mountainous and impoverished region. Many thanks to Fathers Floribert, Ambroise and Matthieu (Douvangar), Fathers Roger and Paulin (Dourum) and Frères Prosper and Omer (Roua) for their hospitality and availability.

CALIFORNIA JOSEPHITE ASSOCIATES DAY OF RECOLLECTION

The California Josephite Associates held their annual Day of Recollection on Saturday, October 22nd at the Josephite Novitiate house. Photos taken by Br Romualdo show the Associates gathered in the kitchen (note Fr Aidan Peter sizing up the desserts!), and the chapel where Fr Aidan Peter led the day with two talks and his homily during Mass.

His inspirational talks focused on "mercy", and works written by Br Michael Powell as well as some of his own works on the Founder. During the Mass the Associates welcomed four new members by presenting them with their Associate pins:  Estella Duran and her husband Brian del Georgio, as well as Paul and Signe Smith (Signe was absent). The Associates now number 29 members. The day concluded with adoration and recitation of the rosary.

VISIT OF BISHOP TO ST LOUIS DE MONTFORT PARISH, SANTA MARIA

VISITE DE L'EVEQUE A LA PAROISSE DE ST LOUIS DE MONTFORT, SANTA MARIA

The parish community of St. Louis de Montfort was blessed to have Bishop Robert Barron, Auxiliary Bishop to the Santa Barbara Pastoral Region, break the bread for us at the 11:30 Mass this Sunday. The intention of the Mass was to receive those Catholics who have been away from the Church for a significant amount of time for one reason or another. He was welcomed by a full and exuberant church with warmth and excitement. During his homily, Bishop Barron focused on mercy and faith. He spoke about the darkest time of the American Church which he defined as being the sexual abuse scandal of the last twenty-five years. In doing so, he emphasized that the Lord calls the Church to be in constant renewal. When the Church whose duty it is to bring people to faith fails to do so, and instead causes people to leave the faith, then it is a sure sign that the Church must undergo cleansing and renewal. This is where the Church is now, extending her arms of mercy towards those who have been victimized, towards those who have been marginalized. He said that the Church is calling us to have faith and to trust. Not to put faith and trust in flawed people, but in Christ himself. And so he extended his arms in welcome to those who have been away, giving the community a new breath of hope and love. After the Mass, the parish hosted a small reception for Bishop Barron in the Parish Center. The Josephite community then hosted him for lunch in the rectory.
